The light entering through the Dome of the Basilica of Mafra National Palace is special and famous architect Le Corbusier defines Light in Architecture, in this way: "Architecture is the wise, correct and magnificent play of volumes gathered under Light; our eyes are made to perceive shapes under Light."
The “Mafra Sunlight” Ring was inspired by this special Light inside the Dome in the Basilica of Mafra National Palace, creating a mystic meditating atmosphere. This Dome in the Basilica was drawn by John Friedrich Ludovici, an architect and goldsmith with German origins, who led its construction, in the beginning of the 18th century.
The “Mafra Sunlight” Ring is made of silver 925, with a polished finish, and a size 15-20, meaning the ring is open and has the inner circle between 15 to 20mm. It has the dimensions of 27x22mm and an approximate weight of 4,00g, in silver certified by "Casa da Moeda", under the License Number T1795, the main official entity that guarantees the quality and authenticity of your Jewels.

In the 18th century, the beauty and monumentality of the Dome in the Basilica of Mafra National Palace was magnificently represented through the lines in the elegant windows on the top floor balcony, where light enters the space of the Basilica. The “Mafra Sunlight” Ring was inspired by the natural sunlight entering this magnificent “cupula” and filtered by the windows on its “lantern tower”. The Dome in the Basilica of Mafra National Palace is very special, since it was the first one to be built, in Portugal, in the middle of the 18th century. On its centre stand ornaments that “play” with perspective giving the illusion of an infinite space, with its drawings getting smaller as they approach the centre of the dome. On the 7th of July 2019, Mafra National Palace was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. For a long time, Mafra was waiting for this to happen and to celebrate this special occasion we created the “Mafra Sunlight” Ring.
On a first stage, its design was produced with a sketch inspired by the Dome in the Basílica of Mafra National Palace. A second stage followed using 3D Modeling with a specific parametric 3D design software – Fusion and AutoCAD – that was applied together with the 3D Printing Technology on a Formlabs 3D Printer producing a castable wax resin piece. On a third stage, this resin piece was handed over to a Jewellery Workshop, to the work of a certified traditional goldsmith that transformed it into a precious silver Jewel. These three steps were carefully executed and monitored with a special attention to every detail, so that the result would be a unique Jewel with a special meaning and top quality.
The Basilica Dome symbolizes the union between the Sky and the Earth, between the Circular Dome and the Square Plan, on a quest to find a passage to a higher Sacred ground. The Dome on any Church represents Eternity, for several reasons. Because of its circular shape it stands as a symbol of the “Cosmic Domo”, and because it represents the Universal Spirit involving the World, among other reasons. The Dome of the Basilica in Mafra’s National Palace has 6 collateral Chapels, with beautiful stone panels produced by the Sculpture School of Mafra, standing on a Latin Cross plan.
