Spark + Dreams

Santiago Calatrava is a Spanish architect and structural engineer we have followed for many years, because of his impressive work. Combining Architecture and Engineering the possibilities are endless, and so Calatrava’s Projects defy the force of gravity, with many structural shapes “floating” in the air, as they are projected many meters in “console”, with “cantilevered beams”, suspended in a delicate balance.

Many of Calatrava’s buildings “play” with this concept, and the Museum of Tomorrow, built in Rio de Janeiro in 2015, is a good example, because its structure is balanced on each side, with overhangs of 75 meters, on the square side, and 45 meters, on the seaside, and these give the impression as if the Museum was “floating”. This feature is impressive! This inspiring concept is one of the ideas that stand in the base of Calatrava’s work and is one of the reasons why we are passionate about his work. On the seaside, the Museum of Tomorrow has a sculpture of a Star standing inside the lake, and this sculpture named “Puffed Star 2” was designed by the well-known American artist Frank Stella, symbolizing an “Aurora” for the Future, a “New Dawn”.

In a career with more than 30 years, Calatrava has developed many Projects and some of the most important ones include the City of Arts and Sciences, in Valencia, Spain (1991-2006); the Milwaukee Art Museum (1994-2001); Turning Torso in Malmö, Sweden (1999–2004); “Gare do Oriente”, in Lisbon, Portugal (1998); or Liège-Guillemins railway station, in Liège, Belgium (2009) among many others.
