Jerónimos DomesDome Cufflinks

Dome CufflinksInside the Church of Santa Maria de Belém, in Jerónimos Monastery, stands a beautiful, vaulted ceiling with many ribs – this ceiling has several star shaped domes, with a unique feature, where the central nave is at the same level as the lateral aisle or as the lateral corridors besides the central nave – and this Church is typical of the late Gothic and the Manueline architectural styles. The Domes inside a Church have the main purpose of distributing the weight of the roof through a stable and well-balanced structure and shape. These Domes also spread the light in a special way, creating a diffuse magical illumination, which happens in an extraordinary way inside the Church of Santa Maria de Belém, highlighted with the vaulted ceiling, a feature that fascinated and inspired us to create these silver Jewels.

3D Printing Technology

How we produce your Jewels

On a first stage, its design was produced with a sketch inspired by the beautiful Domes inside the Church of Santa Maria de Belém, in Jerónimos Monastery. A second stage followed using a specific parametric 3D design software – Fusion and AutoCAD – that was applied together with the 3D Printing Technology on a Formlabs 3D Printer producing a castable wax resin piece. On a third stage, this resin piece was handed over to the work of a certified traditional goldsmith that transformed it into a precious silver Jewel. These three steps were carefully executed and monitored with a special attention to every detail, so that the result would be a unique Jewel with a special meaning and top quality.

Jerónimos Domes SketchMost Churches have vaulted ceilings, typical of the construction method for the sacred spaces, in the Middle Ages, but it’s rare to find a Church with several star shaped domes placed in the shape of a “fan”, with radial ribs. These architectural elements had a special meaning symbolizing the Sky, the way to Heaven, and in this sense the domed ceiling represented all that is celestial, the Cosmos. Another symbol associated with the vaulted ceilings is the connection with all that is sacred, between the rectangular plan of the Church and the curved lines on top, a symbol of the union between the Earth and the Sky.
